The ban on rice importation by the President Muhammadu Buhari government in 2019 has continued to bear positive fruits.
Nigeria used to rank among the top five rice importers before the ban came into full effect.
According to Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Nigeria is now among the top 14 countries of the world which produce rice.
Nigeria is now the number one country in Africa which produces most tonnes of rice.
Records from different data collecting agencies and organisations have shown that local rice production is on the increase as the federal government is also assisting the local rice farmers with loans.
A good number of food security experts praised President Muhammadu Buhari for the ban on rice importation.

If the federal government of Nigeria galvanises its potentials more and ensure the momentum is maintained and even increased for the next five years, the level of rice production in the country could move Nigeria into the top five rice producing countries of the world.
It should be noted that localisation of the economy is good for all and sundry.
