#MuslimBan, #NoMuslimBan: US Attorney General Sally Yates Fired After Rally Row

Sally Yates quickly dismissed after ordering government lawyers to stop defending US president's immigration ban. US President Donald Trump has sacked the country's acting attorney general after she took the rare step of defying the White House by refusing to enforce his sweeping immigration ban. Sally Yates had early on Monday ordered Justice Department lawyers to stop defending Trump's executive order, resulting in her dismissal just hours later. "The acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States," the White House press secretary's office said in an unusually caustic statement. "Ms. Yates is an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration." Yates had agreed to serve in an acting capacity until Senator Jeff Sessions, Trump's pick, was confirmed by the Senate. The W

How Women Undergo Gruelling Drills To Become US Marines

The US Marines have a particular mystique - often first into a hotspot, and last out - and the training recruits undergo is particularly challenging. This applies to female marines - now for the first time being used in combat roles - as well as their male counterparts. Hannah King witnessed some of them undergoing an intense, 54-hour trial known as the Crucible. "Hit 'er, Davey, harder… Hit her harder." The khaki camo-paint caking the drill instructor's face hides her crimson rage as she screeches in at a small recruit, who obediently hammers away at her opponent's head with her fists. This is one of the final events of the Crucible - a gruelling 54-hour endurance test that will ultimately determine which of these young women will become US Marines. Parris Island, hidden from the Atlantic by a tangle of sparkling rivers, looks like the perfect holiday spot. But this is where all female marines come to be trained. Or "reprogrammed", as some p

CAN Has No Business Following Suleiman To DSS Office

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has restated its support for the founder of the Omege Fire Ministries, Johnson Suleman, after he was invited by operatives of the State Security Service, SSS. The security agency summoned the controversial cleric after a video surfaced showing him calling on his congregation to kill Fulani herdsmen so as to protect themselves. “If they are busy killing Christians and nothing is happening, we will kill them and nothing will happen,” he said. Over 200 people have been killed in clashes between Fulani herdsmen and local farming communities in Southern Kaduna. Similar violence in other states of Nigeria have also caused the death of hundreds of people. The Southern Kaduna crisis has since taken a religious dimension despite warnings to the contrary by government officials and peace envoys. Reacting to rumours that CAN would send an entourage to accompany Mr. Suleman to the office of the SSS on Monday, media aide to CAN President Olasupo Ayok

Roger Federer Beats Rafael Nadal In His Open Final To Win His 18th Men's Singles Grand Slam

CNN reports that even for the legendary Roger Federer, this was -- nearly -- unbelievable. After missing the second half of last season with a knee injury, the Swiss star came back in style by winning the Australian Open Sunday and turning the tables on nemesis Rafael Nadal with a gripping 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory in just over 3 1/2 hours. "I don't think either one of us believed we were going to be in the finals at the Australian Open... four, five months ago, and here we stand in the finals," Federer said. But Federer was obviously much the happier. "This is beautiful, but it's still much better, the (other) trophy," Nadal said as he looked glumly at the runner-up trophy. Federer wept when losing to Nadal in the 2009 Australian Open final in five sets. This time he cried tears of joy and vowed to celebrate deep into the morning. 26-shot rally "We're going to party like rock stars," Federer said. Never in his "

Texas Mosque Destroyed In Early Morning Blaze, Cause Not Known

An early-morning fire Saturday destroyed a Texas mosque that was a target of hatred several years ago and experienced a burglary just a week ago. A clerk at a convenience store spotted smoke and flames billowing from the Islamic Center of Victoria at around 2 a.m. and called the fire department. "It's sad to stand there and watch it collapse down, and the fire was so huge," Shahid Hashmi, the Islamic center's president, said. "It looks completely destroyed." Victoria Fire Marshal Tom Legler asked for help from the Texas Fire Marshal's Office and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to determine what caused the blaze. Hashmi said authorities have told him it was too early to speculate. "None whatsoever right now," the center director said. "We don't have any lead or information as to what started the fire and what happened. So I'm sure it's going to be a few days, they told us, before they can

Governor Loses $10 million To Girlfriend

A governor in one of Nigeria’s oil producing states is under probe after $10 million he diverted from the bailout funds allocated to his state was hijacked by his America-based mistress. The unidentified governor had commissioned his mistress to help him launder the money to slush accounts the governor provided. But instead, the lady sent the money into her own account in the United States. The money in question has been traced. According to the report, the governor resorted to using his US-based mistress to stash the funds abroad to avoid detection by security agencies. The cash was allegedly either wired or hauled in tranches in order to beat the nation’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). In spite of the governor’s tricks, however, security agencies were able to intercept the deal between him and his mistress. It was gathered that the diversion of the looted $10 million by the mistress created an uproar that triggered the ongoing investigation of the deal between

Refugee Order: Judge Stops Trump

A Federal Judge in New York on Saturday night granted a stay order on President Donald Trump’s executive order temporarily restricting entry to the U.S. by citizens from seven countries. The order followed a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) challenging an earlier executive order issued by President Donald Trump barring certain citizens from seven countries from entering the the U.S. The court stopped the authorities from deporting anyone with a valid visa and currently being detained or stranded at airports in the country, lawyers for the group said. According to the court order, issued by Judge Ann Donnelly, the decision will stop officials from removing individuals with approved refugee applications, holders of valid visas and people from the affected countries who have been authorised to enter, pending completion of a hearing on the matter in court. Donnelly also wrote that the lawsuit would have a “strong likelihood of success. “There is imminent da

The incident was said to have taken place in the morning between old Nigerian Telecommunication Mast, NITEL, a.k.a Dogon Wire in Hausa, and Bullabulin village which is now deserted with only a military base left. A  driver, Mallam Aliyu Yau, who  claimed to have escaped with his six passengers, said, “Most of the passengers killed and injured were not by Boko Haram sect, but by military escorts  who opened fire on fleeing passengers into the bush, mistaking them as escaping terrorists. “It is unfortunate that our road is not safe today (Saturday morning) as some Boko Haram terrorists laid ambush on the road. Were Trump’s Hands Enlarged in White House Photo? Yes, Journalists Are Really Investigating

Donald Trump is supposedly sensitive about his small hands, and now the internet is wondering if the White House altered an official photograph to make the new president’s hands look a little bigger. The mystery kicked off when Observer arts and culture writer Dana Schwartz tweeted a comparison of the Inauguration Day photo — which she said appeared in the White House during Trump’s interview earlier this week with ABC News’ David Muir. It certainly looks like the size of Trump’s hand, placed on Barack Obama’s shoulder, has been slightly scaled up. Trump 100% photoshopped his hand bigger for this picture hanging in the white house, which is the most embarassing thing I've ever seen pic.twitter.com/MGTbFfdLqp — Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) January 27, 2017 Schwartz then said she went to the original Getty Images version of the image, and compared that to the version she said was altered. That tweet appears to have been deleted. But did the White House actually alter th

Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who  gave the warning in his sermon after commissioning  the ultra modern mosque of the Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger state yesterday, said rather than incite people through preachings, the clerics should focus more on uniting the people of the country and preach against incessant killings of one another which he said is ungodly. The inauguration of the mosque was one of the activities to mark the 26th convocation 35th anniversary of the establishment of the university. Alhaji Sanusi who led the first prayer and also   frowned against some Muslim faithful and clerics who  hide under the  sanctity and immunity of the Holy places to set one part of the society against the other adding that such people didn’t h

Northeast Is 500 Years Behind South In Terms Of Education - VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Abubakar Njodi has said the North East is far behind Southern Nigeria in educational standards. Njodi said this on Friday when he received a delegation from the Victims’ Support Fund, VSF, on a condolence visit over the January 16 suicide bomb attack in the institution. Njodi, a professor of Physical and Health Education, said studies showed that hat the region was about 150 years behind other parts of the country before Boko Haram emerged. The professor noted that it may take 500 years to measure up with the South now that Boko Haram has continued to destroy education in the region. “Education in the North is endangered,” Mr. Njodi lamented. “I have said it at different fora that prior to Boko Haram, there were some studies, some real, some speculative, that showed the north was 100 years behind the south. And that was before Boko Haram came. What it means here is that, at that time if the south should stop going to sch

Reactions Trail Buhari's Latest Picture In London

A cross section of Nigerians have continued to comment on the new latest pictures of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently on a 10-day working leave in London, UK. The new picture, which was posted on Friday night, showed the president in a relax mood with some of his visitors, including Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun. Others in the picture are some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The picture, according to NAN, shows Buhari live in London, contrary to malicious rumours by some Nigerians in the social media that he was either dead or ‘under intensive care’. Some of the comments captured over the sudden emergence of the picture include: “Despite all attempts to debunk the rumours, the wicked mischief makers have continued to spread their falsehood about President Buhari. “Here he is, in fulfillment of their death wish under intensive care.” Mr Kingsley Nwaeze, a social commentator, condemned those spreading dangerous rumours about the president’s he

Venus Stands Between Serena And History

Serena Williams is on the cusp of making Grand Slam history, 19 years after her first appearance at the Australian Open — with only her greatest rival, sister Venus, able to stop her. The 35-year-old American made her Grand Slam debut in Melbourne way back in 1998 and won the first of her major titles at the US Open a year later. She has since accumulated 22 over an astonishing career, matching Steffi Graf’s Open-era record. One more on Saturday — her seventh in Australia — and she will hold the record outright, with only Margaret Court’s all-time mark of 24 left to achieve. Williams has refused to talk about the possibility of finally surpassing the German, after intense pressure over the long-standing record took its toll at last year’s US Open, when she lost in the semi-finals. But she now has a golden chance of further cementing her place in history, and at the same time reclaiming the top world ranking that Angelique Kerber seized from her last year. “It is what it

EXCLUSIVE: Inside America’s damning verdict on Murtala Muhammed, Obasanjo after 1975 coup

For nearly half a century after his stint as Nigeria’s military leader, Murtala Muhammed remained widely regarded as a dogged corruption fighter who took fearless steps against official graft. As head of state, the army general dismissed more than 10, 000 public officials, charged many to court for malpractices, and moved against fraudulent firms. Mr. Muhammed’s administration lasted six months before his assassination, but was long enough to convince many the 37-year-old was one leader who could have aggressively treated – if not cured – Nigeria of its chronic corruption, had he lived longer. But to American diplomats, Mr. Muhammed was a strikingly different figure from the no-nonsense general many Nigerians respected. They believed he was not only an arrogant mass murderer, but just as corrupt as those he went after. And, although brilliant and daring, Mr. Muhammed was an erratic and impetuous ethnic chauvinist who lacked the unifying talent of his predecessor, Yakubu Gowo
