Gombe Motorcycle Accidents Claim 7 Lives, 66 Others Injured - FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Gombe state has revealed that no fewer than seven people have been killed, with another 66 sustaining various degrees of injuries in different motorcycle accidents in the Northeast state.

Dr. Godwin Omiko, sector Commander for FRSC made this known on Sunday, July 7.

Punch reports that: The Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Godwin Omiko, has decried the rising incidents of crashes involving motorcyclists in the state.

He said between January and March this year, 103 persons were involved in motorcycle accidents, which left seven persons dead and 66 others with vaying degrees of injuries.



Omiko disclosed this at a one-day workshop organised by the FRSC for stakeholders in the state on Sunday.

He stated, “Between January and March 2019, 103 persons were involved in motorcycle accident; 66 people were injured and seven deaths were recorded.

“Twenty-five motorcycle and two tricycle accidents were recorded between April and June involving 177 people; 92 cases of injuries were recorded as well as five deaths; 43 motorcycles and four tricycles were involved.”

Omiko explained that the FRSC was more interested in making better riders and the roads safer than imposing fines on defaulters.

Towards this end, he said the FRSC, in line with the directive of the Federal Government, would commence a fresh round of enforcement of driving licences being used by motorists, including motorcyclists, to tackle the menace.

Representatives of the religious and traditional institutions across the state were present at the event.
