Arsenal In Deep Crisis As Arsene Wenger On War Path With Top Players As Champions League Hope Slips Away
There is so much crisis going on with Arsenal FC as Arsene Wenger and some of his senior players could be on war path.
The Gunners dressing-room blame game erupted as Arsene Wenger gave up on the Champions League.
A dismal first-half display included two blunders by Petr Cech as the Gunners crashed to a fourth successive defeat for the first time since 2002.
Among boss Wenger’s cryptic responses to questions was a claim his side were “naked” and “looking for a shirt”.
But they were undressed by Brighton’s Lewis Dunk and Glenn Murray before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit back.
Skipper Laurent Koscielny, 32, claims Wenger must share the blame. Asked who was the guilty party, Koscielny said: “It’s difficult to say if it’s his fault or our fault. The players have responsibility on the pitch, the boss has responsibility, too.
“This boss gives his best for this club and he has done it for 20 years but it’s very difficult and we need to stay together and fight.
“When you play for a big club like Arsenal you need to be in the top four and I don’t know how but now we are in a bad situation.
“During the game we were not in control of our confidence and our individual quality.”
Wenger claims Arsenal have been left naked and exposed after having their pants pulled down yet again.
The Frenchman said: “When you are struggling for confidence, it’s difficult enough when you are wearing just the trousers.
“But when you are completely naked you have to find a shirt and try to get dressed normally again.
“The team needs more support at the moment but when you go through a tough period like this, the environment is always to put them further down.
“I can understand the frustration of the supporters.
“The negativity after losing the League Cup final, plus the fact that we’re not in a fantastic position in the league, has hit us hard.”
Angry travelling fans chanted: “We want Wenger out,” after a dreadful first-half showing at Brighton’s packed Amex Stadium.
But asked whether he was still the right man to turn things around, Wenger claimed: “Yes, because I’ve done it before.
“The quality of a manager is to try to shorten the crisis and I believe I can do that.”
Wenger claims uncertainty over his Arsenal future is not the reason his team are going to miss out on a top-four finish.
Yesterday’s defeat leaves Arsenal 13 points behind fourth-placed Spurs. And Wenger said: “We have to be realistic. The top four is nearly impossible — we are too far behind.
“We need two teams above us to collapse to qualify for the Champions League and I don’t see that happening.
“At the moment, my future is not my main worry. My biggest concern is to get Arsenal winning games again.
“But there is no uncertainty. The uncertainty is simply in the quality of our performance.”
