A 49-year-old Japanese has been killed, with no fewer than 10 others sustaining injuries, following a volcanic eruption close to the famous Japanese ski resort of Kusatsu, shooting flaming rocks into the air.
According to CNN, the volcanic eruption of the 2,160 meter (7,090 ft) Kusatsu-Shirane volcano happened around 10 a.m. local time Tuesday, January 23, the Japanese Meteorological Authority (JMA) told reporters.
The deceased is a member of Japan's Self Defense Force (SDF). He was killed by falling volcanic rocks while engaging in a training exercises on the mountain at the time of the sad incident, the SDF confirmed.
