Churches in Nigeria have been told not to shy away from mending broken fences between couples in order to prevent the high divorce rate in the society.
The religious body have been urged to give urgent attention to the alarming rate of divorce in the society through regular counselling of couples, especially after marriage, to ensure that divorce cases were reduced.
The call was made by Sir (Col.) Kunle Falayi, at the thanksgiving mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral Church, Akure, organised to mark the 50th anniversary of his marriage to Lady Caroline Olufunke Falayi.
Falayi noted that limiting counselling to only courtship had contributed to the increased rate of divorce cases in the church, stating that the statistical data available indicated that the rate of divorce in the society was alarming.
“Aside this, young couples should be patient. There is divorce everywhere because they don’t have the peace of the Lord; they don’t have proper love and this is responsible for cases of divorce these days,” he stated.
He also cautioned women on claiming equal rights with men, noting that it was against what the Bible preached on marriage.
“There is need for more orientation for our women and young men and parents need to educate their children, while the church also has much to do in this regard,” he stated.
His wife also said she had no regrets being married to her husband.
Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Most Reverendd Jude Arogundade, said the couple had exhibited that there was still hope for marriage, noting that the ceremony was meant to underscore the need to sustain marriages and for couples to keep to the vows they made, to help reduce the high rate of divorce cases.
He described the couple as a symbol of truth and dignity, and blessed the union as the couple renewed their vows.
