12 Different Ways Leaders And Each Nigerian Can Promote National Unity, By Nurudeen Tunde Popoola

Promoting national unity is the work of everybody in the country, the government and individual should be involved in the means of promoting national unity.

Nigerian leaders and the government can foster oneness of the various tribes in the country  using the six channels highlighted below

1. Establishment of institutions (such as unity school): Various institution like unity schools are established for the purpose of promoting unity in the country through accommodating children from any part of the country and giving them opportunity to learn.

2. National languages: Despite about the 350 different ethnic groups in Nigeria with different dialects, efforts are being made to promote a national or an official language. For instance English language has been recognized as the official or national language.

3. Employment and Labor mobility: The federal government employs and transfer workers from different cultural groups to work elsewhere in the country.

4. Trading activities: The opening of markets in cities and local areas have made people to exchange goods and services together and therefore help to encourage integration.

5. N.Y.S.C. (National Youth Service Corp)  This program is established by the federal government in 1973 to bring about unity among graduates from different institutions, educated fellows to come together from different state to serve their nation for a period of one year.

Men from the ethnic groups of Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo

6. Transport and communication: Road network, railway lines, telecommunication, bridges and airways are built and constructed by government at various levels to link up rural with urban areas and to ease movement of the people from one place to another, thereby promoting national integration.

Individuals can promote National Unity through the six ways stated below

1. Must be able to tolerate other people
2. Must be hospitable, show warmth and affection to others.
3. Avoid discrimination
4. Allow inter marriage, example of inter marriage is when a Yoruba woman is allowed to marry an Igbo man.
5. Must develop relationship with others
6. By showing love and concern for others.

If the leaders and the followings all decide that enough of hate speeches, enough of religious bigotry, enough of tribal sentiments, enough of nepotism and their likes, national unity will be at our beck and call in Nigeria

#RamadanDailyDigest: Muslim Wives Are Supporters, Not Slaves

Muslims have completed fasting Day 4 today, as they look forward to Day 5 fasting out of the 29 or 30 days fasting; it is important to highlight the roles Muslim wives play in the family. Muslim wives are supporters, and not slaves, and should be treated with utmost dignity. In the religion of Islam, the roles and rights of Muslim wives are copiously written and spoken about. How husbands should relate with their wives are clearly stated. In the Glorious Qur'an, to show the love Allaah has for women, chapter 4 is also called 'Suuratu Nisaa' which translates to chapter of the women in English language. Interesting to know that there is no single chapter out of the total 114 chapters of the Glorious Qur'an named after men, further showing that Muslim wives, daughters, mothers, and all groups of females are held in high esteem by Allaah. It is a sad tale to see what happens in the present day world, whereby some women are maltreated and abused by the society and their part...
